Laos to Cambodia Cycling Odyssey – Mekong Trails & Ancient Temples 🚴♂️🌊🛕
Get ready for a soul-stirring cycling journey through two of Southeast Asia’s most captivating countries—Laos and Cambodia—where quiet riverside paths, mystical ruins, and rich cultural heritage unfold mile by mile. 🌾🌅
This epic ride with Vietnam Adventure Cycling begins in southern Laos, in the laid-back town of Pakse, and follows the mighty Mekong River southward all the way to Cambodia’s legendary Angkor complex. Along the way, you’ll cycle through lush countryside, explore the enchanting 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don), and pass sleepy fishing villages and temples tucked under swaying palms. 🚴♀️🏞️
🌴 In Laos, pedal through a land where water and land seem to merge—quiet trails along rice paddies, golden stupas glinting in the sun, and river islands where buffalo bathe and monks drift by in longtail boats. You'll feel like time slows down here. Before crossing into Cambodia, you'll cycle straight to the border—visas can be issued on arrival for a seamless transition into the next adventure.
🐬 On the Cambodian side, follow the Mekong’s curve to witness rare Irrawaddy dolphins near Kratie, and meet local villagers living in stilt houses along the riverbanks. The road then leads inland toward Siem Reap, where ancient history rises from the jungle in the form of the awe-inspiring Angkor temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
🛕 Want more? If you have extra time, the trip can also start in Luang Prabang, northern Laos, allowing you to explore ancient temples and French colonial charm before heading south.
Join us for a cross-border cycling adventure where nature, history, and human connection blend into one unforgettable ride. 🌍🚴♀️✨

Cycling Along the Mekong to Wat Phou & Champasak Riverside 🌿🚴♂️
After a refreshing breakfast, we set off cycling along the scenic banks of the mighty Mekong River. About 20 km into the ride, we’ll pause for a water stop where you can enjoy fresh seasonal fruit, snacks, and cool drinks to recharge.
Continuing our journey, we follow the Mekong until we cross a ferry, gradually leaving the river behind as the stunning backdrop of Champasak Hill emerges. Here stands the magnificent Wat Phou temple, a remarkable 12th-century Khmer sanctuary built by King Jayavarman VII. We spend 45 minutes to an hour exploring this historic site steeped in ancient culture and breathtaking views.
In the afternoon, we cycle back to Champasak town, where a charming riverside hotel awaits for your comfort and relaxation. Enjoy a peaceful evening with dinner overlooking the Mekong, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.
|

DAY 3: CHAMPASAK – DON KHONG
|
Exploring Don Det & Don Khong Islands by Bike and Ferry 🚴♂️🛶🌿
After breakfast, we catch a local ferry from our hotel to the peaceful island of Don Det. Here, we cycle along quiet dirt roads, immersing ourselves in the slow rhythm of island life and observing local daily activities. The untouched charm of rural village scenes offers a genuine glimpse into the Mekong River community.
Later, we take another ferry back to the mainland and cycle on smooth paved roads toward the main junction, where we pause for a well-deserved lunch break.
In the afternoon, the adventure continues as we bike onto Don Khong Island, the largest island in the area, nestled along the border with Cambodia beside the river. The serene landscapes and gentle pace of life here create the perfect setting to unwind.
Dinner and overnight stay will be at the comfortable Pon Arena Hotel or a similar riverside retreat.
|
|
DAY 4: DON KHONG - FOUR THOUSAND ISLAND - DON KHON
|
Leisurely Ride Through the 4,000 Islands – Discovering Si Phan Don’s Hidden Charms 🚴♂️🌾🌊
Starting from the hotel, today’s easy ride takes us exploring the enchanting 4,000 Islands, known locally as Si Phan Don, spread along the mighty Mekong River. We follow peaceful dirt roads hugging the riverbanks, hopping across small local ferries as we journey from island to island.
Deeper into the villages, we’ll experience authentic island life and the unique culture that defines this riverine paradise. A delightful lunch awaits at one of the islands, where you can savor local flavors amid tranquil surroundings.
As we continue, we pedal alongside the old French colonial railway line (built between 1893 and 1949), tracing its path to the historic French port—a reminder of the region’s fascinating past.
A gentle reminder: please help us keep this pristine environment clean by disposing of empty bottles or cans thoughtfully.
Our day concludes with a return to the comfortable Sengaloun Resort or similar for a restful overnight stay.
|
|
DAY 5: DON KHON- BORDER CROSSING- STUNG TRENG(CAMBODIA )
|
Cycling Along the Mekong to Khone Phapheng Falls & Crossing into Cambodia 🚴♂️🌊🇰🇭
After breakfast, we’ll set off from the hotel, cycling beside the vibrant life along the Mekong River. Watch fishermen casting their nets, children walking to school, and housewives heading to the markets — everyday moments that create perfect "Kodak moments" for your camera. Capture these authentic scenes of local life as you pedal through.
Next, we’ll board a boat to return to the mainland, stopping at a bustling fish market where local fishermen sell their fresh catch to eager middlemen. From here, the bikes will be ready for the next leg of the journey — a ride to the spectacular Khone Phapheng Falls, located right on the border with Cambodia.
After spending about 30 minutes admiring the power and beauty of the falls, we’ll complete the immigration formalities. Say farewell to our Laos team here; Cambodian visas are available at the border for USD 20 per person (remember to bring one passport-sized photo).
We’ll enjoy lunch before transferring to Stung Treng for dinner and overnight stay at Angkor Meas Hotel or a similar accommodation.
|
|
DAY 6: STUNG TRENG- IRRAWADY DOLPHIN- KRATIE
|
Cycling from Stung Treng to Kratie Along the Mekong & Dolphin Spotting 🚴♂️🐬
After breakfast in Stung Treng, we’ll begin cycling along the Mekong River, following peaceful dirt roads for the first 30 km. Next, we’ll transfer briefly onto the National Road — a necessary stretch we can’t avoid — before turning onto quieter back roads for the remaining 45 km. These smaller roads, running alongside the Mekong, offer a more relaxed ride with less traffic and plenty of charming riverside villages and beautiful scenery to take in.
Midway through the day, we’ll pause at Prek Kampi for a scenic boat trip in search of the rare and endangered freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. If you missed them earlier at the 4 Thousand Islands, this is a great chance to spot these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.
After the boat excursion, we’ll cycle the final 23 km stretch to the riverside town of Kratie, where dinner awaits along with a comfortable overnight stay at the Mekong Dolphin Hotel or a similar venue.
|
|
DAY 7: KRATIE –CHLONG-KAMPONG CHAM
|
Cycling Along the Mekong: From Chlong to Kampong Cham 🚴♂️🌾
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to Chlong where our cycling journey begins alongside the mighty Mekong River. This tranquil backroad winds through lush countryside and small riverside villages, offering a rare chance to witness the authentic rhythm of local life. Farmers tend to their rice paddies while fishermen cast their nets at dawn, painting a timeless picture of livelihoods deeply connected to the river.
As you pedal gently along, the vibrant sights and sounds of the region unfold: children playing near the water’s edge, women carrying baskets filled with fresh produce, and the calls of birds soaring overhead. Passing through several Muslim communities adds another fascinating layer to the cultural tapestry, where traditional homes and mosques stand peacefully amid the greenery.
Midway, we board a ferry at Stung Trong to cross the wide Mekong, a refreshing break that offers sweeping river views and the chance to spot waterbirds and river life. Once across, the route continues for another 33 km on a mix of smooth paved and rustic dirt roads, guiding you through serene landscapes dotted with palm trees and small markets buzzing with locals.
Our day ends in Kampong Cham, a charming town with colonial architecture and lively street life. Here, you can relax and reflect on the day’s journey over a delicious dinner. Overnight accommodations will be at the comfortable IBN Asia Hotel or a similar welcoming retreat.
|
|
DAY 8: KAMPONG CHAM- KAMPHONG THOM
|
Cycling from Kampong Cham to Kampong Thom: A Ride Through Rich Farmland and History 🚴♂️🌿
After breakfast at the hotel, we begin cycling through Kampong Cham, one of Cambodia’s largest provinces known for its abundant fruit orchards and vast rubber plantations. The fertile land and the lifeline of the Mekong River provide rich resources that support local farming communities. Our morning ride covers 50 km through these vibrant agricultural landscapes before we pause for lunch.
In the afternoon, we continue cycling past expansive rubber plantations, a legacy introduced by the French in the 19th century.
Originally, rubber plants from South America were brought in but failed to thrive in Cambodia’s climate. Later, the French imported rubber trees from Malaysia, which adapted successfully and still flourish today.
After cycling the final 28 km to Kampong Thmor, we transfer by vehicle along National Road No. 6 for about 45 minutes to bypass the busy traffic en route to Kampong Thom. Here, we enjoy dinner and a restful overnight stay at the comfortable Sambor Village Resort or a similar accommodation.
|
|
DAY 9: KAMPONG THOM-SAMBOR PREI KUK-SIEMREAP
|
Cycling to Sambor Prei Kuk and Transfer to Siem Reap 🚴♂️🏛️
After breakfast at the hotel, we set off cycling to explore the remarkable Sambor Prei Kuk, a pre-Angkorian temple complex. Most of these temples, built between 615 and 650 AD, showcase stunning brickwork and reflect the architectural style of the Chenla Kingdom, when this site served as the capital before the rise of Angkor.
Following an inspiring visit, we cycle to the nearby Prek Pros Bridge, where a local restaurant awaits us for lunch. After refueling, we transfer by vehicle for approximately two hours to Siem Reap, the gateway to the Angkor temples. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and relax.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at your leisure and overnight stay at Hari Residence & Spa or a similar hotel.
|
|
Day 10: SIEM REAP- ANGKOR COMPLEX
|
Cycling Through the Majestic Temples of Siem Reap 🚴♂️🏯
On your first morning in Siem Reap, we set off on two wheels to explore the enchanting temples along the Small Circuit route. Pedal past the towering pyramid of Takeo, then lose yourself in the mysterious jungle-clad ruins of Ta Prohm — famously featured in Tomb Raider. Glide alongside the tranquil waters of Sras Srang, the ancient king’s bathing pond, before cycling through the grand walled city of Angkor Thom, where history and architecture blend into an awe-inspiring spectacle.
After a delicious local lunch, we continue our ride to the breathtaking Angkor Wat — the largest religious monument in the world. Marvel at the intricate stone carvings and soaring towers that tell stories of an ancient empire, surrounded by serene moats and lush greenery.
Back at the hotel, enjoy some free time to relax or dive into the vibrant nightlife of Siem Reap. Choose from fine dining restaurants or lively bars to cap off your unforgettable day of adventure and discovery.
|
|
Day 11: SIEMREAP- BANTEAY SREI- SIEMREAP
|
Cycling to the Delicate Temples of Banteay Srei 🚴♂️🌿
This morning, you’ll pedal north through the lush Cambodian countryside, greeted by waving villagers and charming wooden stilt houses. Along the way, we’ll pause at a few villages where everyday life unfolds slowly—watch children playing, farmers tending their fields, and notice the large black pots bubbling with a rich, caramel-colored mixture. This region is famous for its sugar palm sweets—a perfect natural energy boost for your ride!
As you arrive at Banteay Srei, be captivated by its exquisite beauty. This temple, carved from soft pink sandstone, dazzles with intricate floral patterns and detailed scenes from the Ramayana epic, showcasing some of Cambodia’s finest ancient artistry.
