This morning, we hop on our bikes and begin exploring the gentle rhythm of life in Laos’ tranquil capital. Unlike most bustling Asian metropolises, Vientiane offers a peaceful, almost provincial charm, where French colonial architecture blends harmoniously with Buddhist spirituality.
Our cycling route takes us through leafy boulevards and out toward historic and cultural highlights such as Vat Sisaket, the city’s oldest surviving monastery dating back to 1818, and the Victory Gate (Anousavali)—Laos’ version of the Arc de Triomphe. We’ll also visit a fascinating Buddhist sculpture park and a museum of religious art, each offering deeper insights into the spiritual heart of the country.

🚴 Cycling from Vientiane to Nam Ngum – Into the Heart of Rural Laos 🌾🌿
Leaving the capital behind, we head north through the peaceful outskirts of Vientiane, where the city's quiet rhythm quickly gives way to open countryside and rustic charm. After a short stretch on Route 10, we veer onto unsealed backroads, riding through traditional Lao villages rarely seen by tourists.
As we pedal deeper into the landscape, the scenery transforms—lush green rice paddies, towering palms, and children calling out cheerful “Sabaai-dii!” from bamboo stilt houses. The ride follows the gentle curves of the Nam Ngum River, offering quiet riverside views and a real taste of rural life.
By late afternoon, we arrive at our serene resort, nestled in the jungle-covered hills. Tucked away from the world, this peaceful retreat offers the perfect setting to relax and reconnect with nature. 🌳🌸

We begin the day right from our hotel, pedaling out into the peaceful Lao countryside. The ride takes us through a patchwork of rural farmland—lush rice paddies, vegetable gardens, and small villages where daily life flows gently in tune with the land.
As we move further, the landscapes become more expansive, opening up to reveal sweeping views of forested hills and agricultural plains. Our destination this morning is the magnificent Nam Ngum Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Laos. With its calm, mirror-like surface and forested islets, it’s the perfect place to pause and enjoy a well-earned lunch by the water’s edge. 🐟🌿
After lunch, we trade our bikes for a bus ride, heading south into the heart of limestone country. By late afternoon, we reach Vang Vieng, a town famed for its dramatic karst cliffs and riverside charm. Here, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the stunning mountain views from the comfort of our hotel.

Today’s ride takes us through a landscape framed by rolling hills on both sides, setting the tone for an adventurous day ahead. After covering around 28 km, we face our first real challenge—an 8 km climb that gives us a taste of the terrain to come.
Rewarded by a long, gentle descent, we coast into the charming town of Kasi for a well-earned lunch break. The afternoon brings tougher roads as we push toward our finish point, followed by a relaxing transfer to Phon Khoun for our overnight stay.
This varied route offers a perfect blend of physical challenge and scenic beauty, showcasing the peaceful countryside of Northern Laos.

Crossing the mighty Mekong River by ferry at Tha Deua, we continue our journey with about 30 km remaining to Sayabouly, the provincial capital. Nestled in a broad valley, Sayabouly treats us to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, a perfect backdrop to unwind after a rewarding day of cycling.
We end the day in comfort, resting at a cozy guesthouse in town.

Known as the “Yellow Banana Leaf People,” these communities build their homes from banana leaves that they move once they turn yellow, embodying a truly nomadic lifestyle deeply connected to the forest.
