Tour Overview
Embark on an unforgettable 9-day cycling adventure from Hanoi to Luang Prabang, crossing two countries and approximately 534 km of spectacular mountain terrain as we journey from Northern Vietnam into the remote highlands of Laos and finally toward the legendary Mekong River.
The adventure begins in Hanoi, where an overnight train carries us north to Lao Cai. From here, we climb onto our bikes and begin the journey toward Sapa, surrounded by the dramatic mountains and valleys of Northwest Vietnam. Over the following days, the route continues through Lai Chau and Muong Lay, taking us deeper into a region defined by towering mountains, winding roads, remote communities and constantly changing highland scenery.
Our journey then reaches Dien Bien Phu, before we ride toward the Vietnam–Laos border and cross into Northern Laos. The character of the adventure changes once again as we continue through Muang Khua and Oudomxay, experiencing quieter roads, isolated mountain landscapes and the slower rhythm of rural Laos.
From Oudomxay, we ride south toward Pakbeng, where the mountains finally meet one of Southeast Asia's great waterways—the Mekong River. After seven rewarding cycling days, we trade our bikes for a speedboat and follow the Mekong downstream toward Luang Prabang, creating a spectacular finale to our cross-border journey.
Combining challenging mountain cycling, remote landscapes, cultural encounters, an international border crossing, an overnight train and a Mekong River journey, Mountains to Mekong is designed for adventurous riders who want to experience Vietnam and Laos far beyond the usual tourist routes.

Itinerary
DAY 1: HANOI – LAO CAI
DAY 1: HANOI – LAO CAI
Our adventure begins in Hanoi, with a relaxed morning for guests to enjoy the city at their own pace. While you have free time to explore, relax or make your own plans, our team will assist with the Laos visa application process in preparation for the border crossing later in the journey. The visa service costs approximately USD 100 and normally requires around 6–8 hours to process. Please note that the Laos Embassy operates Monday to Friday, so the tour schedule should be arranged accordingly. Later in the afternoon, we meet again for a quick bike fitting session, making the necessary adjustments to ensure everyone is comfortable and ready for the riding days ahead. This is followed by a detailed trip briefing with your cycling guide, covering the route, riding conditions, daily procedures, safety, support vehicle arrangements and other important information for our journey through Northwest Vietnam and Northern Laos. With the preparations complete, we transfer to the railway station and board the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. Settle into your cabin for the night as we leave the capital behind and travel north toward the mountains, ready to begin our first cycling stage to Sapa the following morning.

DAY 2: LAO CAI – SAPA
DAY 2: LAO CAI – SAPA
Arriving in Lao Cai, we prepare the bikes and begin the first cycling stage of the tour, riding approximately 50 km toward Sapa. Almost immediately, the landscape starts to change as we leave the lowlands and head into the mountainous terrain of Northwest Vietnam. The road gradually gains elevation, bringing increasingly impressive views of valleys, forested slopes and highland settlements. It is a rewarding introduction to the character of this journey, combining a meaningful climbing challenge with the excitement of reaching one of Vietnam’s best-known mountain destinations by bicycle. We finish the day in Sapa, where the cooler mountain atmosphere and dramatic surroundings provide a memorable first overnight stop after our opening ride. |
DAY 3: SAPA – LAI CHAU
DAY 3: SAPA – LAI CHAU
After breakfast, we leave Sapa and continue deeper into the mountains on a 74 km ride toward Lai Chau. Today’s route is a substantial highland stage, with winding roads carrying us through one of the most dramatic landscapes of Northwest Vietnam. The journey is defined by mountain ridges, broad valleys and long stretches of open scenery. Climbs and descents create a constantly changing rhythm, while the remote surroundings make the experience feel far removed from the busy cities of the lowlands. Reaching Lai Chau at the end of the ride brings a strong sense of progress as we continue west across the northern mountains and prepare for another rewarding stage tomorrow. |
DAY 4: LAI CHAU – MUONG LAY
DAY 4: LAI CHAU – MUONG LAY
Our mountain journey continues from Lai Chau to Muong Lay with approximately 70 km of cycling. The route takes us farther across Northwest Vietnam, following roads that connect remote towns through an impressive landscape of mountains and valleys. Today offers another full immersion in the highlands, where long views, changing elevations and quiet stretches of road make the ride as scenic as it is rewarding. The moderate distance allows us to maintain a comfortable rhythm while still covering meaningful ground across the region. By the end of the day, we arrive in Muong Lay and settle in for the evening. Tomorrow brings one of the longest cycling stages of the tour as we continue toward Dien Bien Phu. |
DAY 5: MUONG LAY – DIEN BIEN PHU
DAY 5: MUONG LAY – DIEN BIEN PHU
Today is one of the major riding days of the journey as we cycle approximately 100 km from Muong Lay to Dien Bien Phu. With a long distance ahead, we settle into a steady pace and spend much of the day travelling through the mountainous interior of Northwest Vietnam. The route unfolds through remote valleys, rural communities and rolling highland terrain, giving us a true sense of travelling across the region by bicycle rather than simply moving between destinations. The changing scenery and long hours in the saddle make this a demanding but highly satisfying stage. After completing the 100 km ride, we arrive in Dien Bien Phu for a well-earned rest. Our next stage will take the adventure across the international frontier and into Northern Laos. |
DAY 6: DIEN BIEN PHU – MUANG KHUA
DAY 6: DIEN BIEN PHU – MUANG KHUA
Leaving Dien Bien Phu, we begin a memorable cross-border cycling day toward Muang Khua in Northern Laos. Today’s ride covers approximately 60 km and marks one of the defining transitions of the entire tour. As we make our way out of Vietnam and into Laos, the character of the journey gradually changes. The roads lead through quieter mountain surroundings and increasingly remote communities, giving us our first taste of the slower rhythm and rugged landscapes of Northern Laos. We finish the day in Muang Khua, our first overnight stop in Laos. After days of cycling across Northwest Vietnam, crossing into a second country by bike adds a special sense of adventure to the journey. |
DAY 7: MUANG KHUA – OUDOMXAY
DAY 7: MUANG KHUA – OUDOMXAY
From Muang Khua, we continue through Northern Laos on another substantial 100 km cycling stage toward Oudomxay. The route remains mountainous and remote, demanding steady riding while rewarding us with a strong sense of exploration. Much of today is about experiencing the scale and isolation of the Lao highlands. Forested slopes, mountain roads and widely spaced communities create an adventurous backdrop as we work our way across the region under our own power. After a full day in the saddle, we reach Oudomxay and settle in for the night. With the Mekong getting closer, the journey is beginning to transition from high mountain riding toward the river landscapes that will define the final part of the tour. |
DAY 8: OUDOMXAY – PAKBENG
DAY 8: OUDOMXAY – PAKBENG
Our final cycling stage takes us approximately 80 km from Oudomxay to Pakbeng. After several days among the mountains of Vietnam and Laos, today brings us toward the Mekong River and a new landscape for the final chapter of the journey. The ride continues through the countryside of Northern Laos, with quiet roads and highland scenery accompanying us as we make our way toward Pakbeng. Gradually, the route descends toward the great river corridor that has connected communities across the region for generations. Arriving in Pakbeng completes seven cycling days and approximately 534 km on the bike. It is a satisfying milestone, and tonight we can look back on the mountain crossing before exchanging our bicycles for a speedboat tomorrow. |
DAY 9: PAKBENG – LUANG PRABANG
DAY 9: PAKBENG – LUANG PRABANG
For the final day of the tour, we leave the bicycles behind and continue from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang by speedboat along the Mekong River. After seven days of mountain cycling, travelling by water offers a completely different perspective on Northern Laos. The river becomes our route for the day, carrying us past forested hills, remote riverbanks and the broad landscapes of the Mekong corridor. It is a relaxed and scenic conclusion after the demanding cycling stages that brought us across two countries. We arrive in Luang Prabang, where our Mountains to Mekong adventure comes to an end. From the overnight train out of Hanoi to 534 km of cycling through the mountains of Vietnam and Laos, followed by a final Mekong journey, the tour finishes with a memorable sense of distance travelled and landscapes discovered. |
